DAVID GELFAND
Composer
Based in New York, David Gelfand is a composer whose major influences are Bach, the 70s Minimalism of Glass and Reich, the Ambient music of Eno, and the Progressive Rock of Robert Fripp’s King Crimson.
Dave grew up in Brooklyn, New York, took his first piano lessons at 10, and began composing soon thereafter. He graduated from the newly-established Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College, where he studied composition with Noah Creshevsky and music theory and history with Nancy Hager, Sherman Van Solkema, and Carole Oja.
Dave believes that the first decade of Minimalism was its best, and as a composer coming of age in its Golden Era his challenge was to find an original voice while fully embracing its spirit. What he emerged with was a unique approach to Minimalist composition.
About His Music...
Dave’s music combines the developmental techniques of Minimalism, the narrative form of Western Classical Music, and a texture animated by traditional counterpoint, giving the listener the feeling of harking back and looking forward all at once.
